Riding on the Crest of a Wave

It's been niggling for a few years now, the guilt has been growing. I hate to own up to it actually but, as a resident of Bali, until recently I had never tried surfing. Yes I know,.... body surfing & boogey boarding, we do it regularly, but the real stuff, no. So, when I was invited by Ripcurl to have a go, I got straight down the beach.

Ripcurl, Asia's leading surf school, organized an hours' private lesson for my 6 year old son and I. I wondered what we could possibly do in just an hour but got the kit and sunscreen on, hurried across the hot black sand and into listening mode to give it a go.

Ian – our 'cool dude' instructor - was fantastic at getting the message across and was accompanied by Rusty, who gave superb demonstrations. They had us jumping on the board, lying on the board and surfing on the board all on the beach before we tried the real thing. I have to say I felt pretty 'uncool' standing surfing on the beach in my crash helmet in full view of the professionals. (We all have to start somewhere I guess.)

After quite a lot of practice and the use of cool 'surfie' words we were let loose to try & get on the board in a laying position and ride the waves. We did it – without too many mouthfuls of salty water. The next step was to try and get up on the board. Never in a month of Sundays did I imagine that either of us would do it, on this our very first lesson. So, imagine my surprise when......

Yes, honestly! Both of us rode many a wave. I put it all down to Ian's fantastic tuition (and perhaps a bit of pure Bali luck too). The 'surf buzz' reminded me of the 'ski buzz' that, living in Bali, I haven't felt for a while – we had a really fun morning and got the thrill.
Ripcurl's Surf School is located on Blue Ocean Beach (selected because of the safety of the location, with a full sand only beach break it is supposedly the safest spot on the island for learning to surf) and they offer expert and safe tuition with many, very professional instructors. There are Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced group lessons available for half-days, whole-days or 3-day periods – for 12 years old and upwards. Private lessons such as ours are bookable by the hour – and our hour was actually an hour and a half with no extra charge, and these begin for children as young as four years old. For the more experienced there are Master's Lessons to take surfing to a higher level of mastering reef breaks, short boards, bottom turns and the cut back (don't ask me!..) Pro-Rider lessons get into reef breaks, floaters, re-entries and lots more! These classes are taken in other beautiful coastal areas, with bigger waves and 'more air'.

The Rip Curl School of Surf offers 16 different classes; the average client takes 3.5 classes.

From 1998 to 2005, Ripcurl have taught over 12,000 people to surf and in this time they have had four small incidents that required professional medical attention, all of which were immediately resolved at the Bali International Medical Center and all four clients returned to continue their surfing lessons. Say no more......definitely professional. So, no excuses, lessons are open to anyone (the oldest student was in her eighties) & they really can adapt to your schedule to suit your timings – depending on the tide and wave conditions. Ripcurl will also collect you from your hotel, so you don't even have to get yourself there.
The best surfboards are used and they are covered in a special protective rubber so as not to hurt you too much if they tap you.
All Instructors and Assistants are professionally trained in CPR, first aid, surf rescue and have regular training. They are also accredited by the Indonesian Surf School Association and trained to the highest standards in surf education.

All courses include hotel transfers, surfboard (handy!), helmet, rash vest, imported sunscreen, drinking water and an end of lesson certificate. All activities are covered by a $100,000 insurance policy. Ripcurl can also do surf guiding (sounds impressive as it is) create corporate packages and equipment rental. Ripcurl, their motto as far as I can see, - 'anything to help!'
Just to point out, if you have never surfed before there are a few things you should take along with you to your lesson.
1. A sense of humour – you will get a lot of ocean up your nose and then loose it for the rest of the day, you will probably get bashed by the board and you will feel just a tiny bit silly in your crash hat.
2. A pair of orangutan arms – because whoever designed surfboards to be carried the way they are, had incredibly long arms.

Go find the waves, do the thing & enjoy.
Do you know what Ripcurl's promise is? 'If you aren't standing on the board by the end of your first lesson, the next one's free'. How can you beat that?

R A H A S I A 9 0 / 1 0 KEHIDUPAN

Apa Rahasia dari 90/10 ? 10 % kehidupan dibuat oleh hal-hal
yang terjadi terhadap kita. 90 % kehidupan ditentukan oleh bagaimana
kita bereaksi / memberi respon. Apa artinya ? Kita sungguh-sungguh
tidak dapat mengontrol 10 % kejadian-kejadian yang menimpa kita.
Kita tidak dapat mencegah kerusakan mobil. Pesawat mungkin
terlambat, dan mengacaukan seluruh jadwal kita. Seorang supir
mungkin menyalip kita di tengah kemacetan lalu-lintas. Kita tidak
punya kontrol atas hal yang 10 % ini. Yang 90 % lagi berbeda. Kita
menentukan yang 90 % ! Bagaimana ? Dengan reaksi kita. Kita tidak
dapat mengontrol lampu merah, tapi dapat mengontrol reaksi kita.
Jangan biarkan orang lain mempermainkan kita, kita dapat
mengendalikan reaksi kita !

Mari lihat sebuah contoh. Engkau sedang sarapan bersama
keluarga. Adik perempuanmu menumpahkan secangkir kopi ke kemeja
kerjamu.
engkau terlambat, engkau mengendarai mobil melewati batas kecepatan
maksimum. Setelah tertunda 15 menit karena harus membayar tilang,
engkau tiba di sekolah. Adikmu berlari masuk. Engkau melanjutkan

Kenapa ? Karena reaksimu pagi tadi. Kenapa hari mu
buruk ?

a) Karena secangkir kopi yang tumpah ?
b) Karena kecerobohan adikmu ?
c) Karena polisi yang menilang ?
d) Karena dirimu sendiri ?

Kenapa ?
Karena REAKSI kita. SUNGGUH KITA TIDAK DAPAT MENGONTROL 10 % HAL-HAL
YANG TERJADI. TAPI YANG 90 % LAGI DITENTUKAN OLEH REAKSI KITA
TERHADAP KEJADIAN TERSEBUT.

Bosan Hidup

Seorang pria mendatangi Sang Master, "Guru, saya sudah bosan
hidup. Sudah jenuh betul. Rumah tangga saya berantakan. Usaha saya
kacau. Apapun yang saya lakukan selalu berantakan. Saya ingin mati."
Sang Master tersenyum, "Oh, kamu sakit." "Tidak Master, saya tidak
sakit. Saya sehat. Hanya jenuh dengan kehidupan. Itu sebabnya saya
ingin mati." Seolah-olah tidak mendengar pembelaannya, sang Master
meneruskan, "Kamu sakit. Dan penyakitmu itu sebutannya, 'Alergi
Hidup'.

Sungai kehidupan
mengalir terus, tetapi kita menginginkan status-quo. Kita berhenti di
tempat, kita tidak ikut mengalir. Itu sebabnya kita jatuh sakit. Kita
mengundang penyakit. Resistensi kita, penolakan kita untuk ikut
mengalir bersama kehidupan membuat kita sakit.

Yang namanya usaha, pasti ada pasang-surutnya. Dalam hal
berumah-tangga, bentrokan-bentrokan kecil itu memang wajar, lumrah.
Persahabatan pun tidak selalu langgeng, tidak abadi. Apa sih yang
langgeng, yang abadi dalam hidup ini ? Kita tidak menyadari sifat
kehidupan. Kita ingin mempertahankan suatu keadaan. Kemudian kita

guru. "Jadi kamu tidak ingin sembuh. Kamu betul-betul ingin
mati?" "Ya, memang saya sudah bosan hidup." "Baik, besok sore kamu
akan mati. Ambillah botol obat ini. Setengah botol diminum malam ini,
setengah botol lagi besok sore jam enam, dan jam delapan malam kau
akan mati dengan tenang."

Giliran dia menjadi bingung.
Begitu rileks, begitu
santai !

Tinggal 1 malam, 1 hari, dan ia akan mati. Ia akan
terbebaskan dari segala macam masalah. Malam itu, ia memutuskan untuk
makan malam bersama keluarga di restoran Jepang. Sesuatu yang sudah
tidak pernah ia lakukan selama beberapa tahun terakhir. Pikir-pikir
malam terakhir, ia ingin meninggalkan kenangan manis. Sambil makan,
ia bersenda gurau. Suasananya santai banget !

kupingnya, "Sayang, aku mencintaimu. "Karena malam itu adalah malam
terakhir, ia ingin meninggalkan kenangan manis ! Esoknya bangun
Tiupan angin
pagi menyegarkan tubuhnya. Dan ia tergoda untuk melakukan jalan pagi.
Pulang kerumah setengah jam kemudian, ia menemukan istrinya masih
tertidur. Tanpa membangunkannya, ia masuk dapur dan membuat 2 cangkir
kopi.

orang. Stafnya pun bingung, "Hari ini, Boss kita kok aneh ya ?" Dan
sikap mereka pun langsung berubah. Mereka pun menjadi lembut.

Tiba-tiba hidup menjadi indah. Ia mulai menikmatinya.
Pulang kerumah jam 5 sore, ia menemukan istri tercinta menungguinya

selalu merepotkan kamu." Anak-anak pun tidak ingin ketinggalan, "Pi,
maafkan kami semua. Selama ini, Papi selalu stres karena perilaku
kami."

Tiba-tiba, sungai kehidupannya mengalir kembali. Tiba-tiba,
hidup menjadi sangat indah.
sebelumnya ?

Ia mendatangi sang Guru lagi.
kehidupan. Leburkan egomu, keangkuhanmu, kesombonganmu. Jadilah
lembut, selembut air. Dan mengalirlah bersama sungai kehidupan. Kau
tidak akan jenuh, tidak akan bosan. Kau akan merasa hidup. Itulah
rahasia kehidupan. Itulah kunci kebahagiaan. Itulah jalan menuju
ketenangan."

Konon, ia masih mengalir terus. Ia tidak pernah lupa hidup dalam
kekinian. Itulah sebabnya, ia selalu bahagia, selalu tenang, selalu
HIDUP !!!

WINNERS VS LOSERS

The Winner says,"It may be difficult but it is possible"
The Loser says ,"It may be possible but it is too difficult"

When a Winner make a mistake, he says ,"I was wrong"
When a Loser make a mistake, he says ,"It wasn't my fault"

The Winner is always part of the answer
The Loser is always part of the problem

Winner chooses what they say
Loser say what they chooses

The Winner sees an answer for every problem
The Loser sees a problem for every answer

Winner sees the gain
Loser sees the pain

The Winner says ,"Let me do it for you"
The Loser says ,"That's not my job"

Winners believe in win win
Loser believe win for them and someone has to lose

A winner makes commitments

About Life

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter ask for a job in a timber
merchant, and he got it.The pay was really good and so were the work
conditions.

For that reason ,the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His
boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to
work.

The first day,the woodcutter brought 18 trees. "Congratulations," the boss
said. "Go on that way!" Very motivated for the boss' words, the woodcutter
try harder the next day,but he only could bring 15 trees.
The third day he try even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees.
Day after day he was bringing less and less trees."I must be losing my
strength",the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized,
saying that he could not understand what was going on.

"When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked. "Sharpen?
I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees."

Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to
sharpen the axe." In today's world, it seems that everyone is
busier than ever, but less happy than ever.

Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp?
There's nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But God doesn't want us
to get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in
life, like taking time to pray, to read .We all need time to relax, to
think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don't take time to sharpen the
axe, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness.
So start Today , Think about the ways by which you could do your job more
effectively and add a lot of value to it.

Learn From Bamboo

One day I decided to quit...I quit my job, my relationship, my
spirituality... I wanted to quit my life. I went to
the woods to have one
last talk with God. "God", I said. "Can you give me
one good reason not to quit?" His answer surprised me...

"Look around", He said. "Do you see the fern and the bamboo?"
"Yes", I replied.

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I
took very good care of
them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The
fern quickly grew from the
earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet
nothing came from the
bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In
the second year the Fern
grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing
came from the bamboo
seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo." He said.

"In year three there was still nothing from the
bamboo seed. But I would
not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing
from the bamboo seed. I would not quit." He said.

"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from
the earth. Compared to
the fern it was seemingly small and
insignificant...But just 6 months later
the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent
the five years growing
roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what
it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it
could not handle." He said to me.

"Did you know, my child, that all this time you
have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots?"

"I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you."
"Don't compare yourself to others." He said. "The
bamboo had a different
purpose than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful."
"Your time will come", God said to me. "You will rise high"

"How high should I rise?" I asked.
"How high will the bamboo rise?" He asked in return.
"As high as it can?" I questioned
"Yes." He said, "Give me glory by rising as high as you can."
I left the forest and bring back this story. I hope these words can help you
see that God will never give up on you. He will never give up on you.

--
Never regret a day in your life.
Good days give you happiness; bad days give you
experiences; both are
essential to life.
